From Brisbane to the Nation: The Evolution of the BPL into the Century Champions League
From Brisbane to the Nation: The Evolution of the BPL into the Century Champions League Cricket is a game that has continuously evolved over the centuries—and the latest transformation is making waves across Australia. What started as the Brisbane Premier League (BPL), a thriving local T20 competition, has now grown into a dynamic, national spectacle rebranded as the Century Champions League. With this bold new identity comes a revolutionary format that’s changing the way Australians experience the game: Century Cricket—a fast-paced, 100-ball format that’s capturing the hearts of fans young and old. A New Era of Cricket Down Under Inspired by the success of The Hundred in England, the Century Champions League brings the 100-ball format to Australian soil in spectacular style. Gone are the traditional 20 overs per side—instead, each team faces 100 balls. It’s cricket, but with a modern twist: simplified, punchy, and designed for today’s fast-paced world. The format is straightforward yet innovative: 100 balls per innings, with bowlers delivering either five or ten-ball spells. Change ends every ten balls. Strategic timeouts, explosive batting, and rapid-fire field changes all combine to keep the energy levels sky-high and the spectators on the edge of their seats. From Local Roots to a National Stage The BPL began as a local T20 league that provided a platform for emerging cricketers across Queensland. It quickly grew in popularity, drawing crowds and unearthing talent. Now, under the new Century Champions League banner, it’s expanding its reach, welcoming teams and players from across Australia. With top-class juniors, semi-professionals, and elite coaches involved, the competition has become a melting pot of skill, strategy, and showmanship. This national stage offers young players more than just a game—it’s a launchpad to greater opportunities, with scouts and selectors now closely watching each thrilling 100-ball battle. Why Everyone’s Loving It The appeal of Century Cricket lies in its intensity. In a world where attention spans are short and time is precious, 100-ball cricket delivers all the drama, power-hitting, and strategy of longer formats—condensed into just over an hour and a half of action per innings. Families are turning out in droves. Kids are staying glued to the action. The music, lights, commentary, and fan zones turn every match into an event. It’s not just about cricket anymore—it’s about entertainment. And for the players, it’s a thrilling challenge: every ball counts, every mistake is magnified, and every big moment can turn the game. Looking Ahead As the Century Champions League cements itself as a national competition, it’s becoming more than just a tournament—it’s a movement. One that’s reinvigorating grassroots cricket, offering fresh pathways to young athletes, and redefining how the sport is played and consumed in Australia. From its humble beginnings in Brisbane to its current national spotlight, the league’s transformation is proof that cricket is anything but stuck in the past. With the century format leading the charge, the future of Australian cricket looks bold, bright, and just 100 balls away.

Brisbane Premier League returns with new playing format for senior players, The Century
Brisbane Premier League returns with new playing format for senior players, The Century https://moretonmagic.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Untitled-design.mp4 For the first time ever in the southern hemisphere, inspired by The Hundred in the UK but featuring several new innovations to suit the festival format, The Century is a concept that will see senior players compete for the 2022 title under different rules. Stepping away from the traditional T20 format has allowed the BPL to evolve and grow the great Australian game once again. “Since its launch, the BPL has always sought to identify opportunities to extend the playing experience of our cricketers. To be able to build off the fantastic inaugural BPL season that introduced everyone to the excitement of a private franchise cricket competition with our own take on the 100-ball format is a wonderful next step in the evolution of the BPL. I cannot wait to see what our league partners, franchise owners, players, coaches and support staff deliver with The Century,” said Chair of the BPL Stuart Giles. The Century games will see 100 balls per innings with each bowler delivering a maximum of 20 balls per match. 20 balls will be bowled from each end with at least 10 consecutive balls delivered by the same bowler. Further excitement and pressure will be added with a free hit available to the batter following a wide delivery. When fielding, only two players from each team will be allowed outside of the initial 30-yard circle for the first 20-ball powerplay, and matches will run for two and a half hours. In the lead up to the competition weekend in August, the eight privately owned franchises will attend an auction to bid on new players for their teams; an auction which is open to all players across the country. “Having coached in The Hundred format of the game and as a member of the Bayside Pirates ownership team, I am excited by The Century format in the second edition of the BPL for the seniors. I see this as another option for players to grow and expand their game, take it to the next level and showcase their team and individual ability. The Century is a faster game and one with some interesting tactical challenges for captains and players, particularly with the further changes and innovations the BPL is bringing to the table. I am looking forward to seeing how the players adapt and teams perform later on in the year,” said Darren Lehmann. For most, The Century will be the first time they’ve ever played it and presents another amazingopportunity for them to learn a new format, one that is sure to have a big future in the world of cricket. “As a franchise owner of the Northern Kings and a player who played in last year’s inaugural Hundred in England, I’m very excited about the launch of The Century. 100-ball cricket is an outstanding format: fast, entertaining, and conducive to lots of runs which I love. It’s fantastic that players will now have the chance to play the format here in Brisbane. The BPL is all about giving players opportunities to play formats that they love and we saw this last year with the juniors getting the chance to play T20 cricket. This is why the BPL is so dynamic and innovative: “they’ve got the ability to pivot and move with speed, ultimately helping grow the game with plenty of smiles,” said Chris Lynn.
MORETON MAGIC UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
Will the Magic cast a spell on their rivals much like they did last year? A very strong list of retentions holds the Magic in a good place and should be sniffing around the top half of the table again for BPL|02. Grade cricket legends like Preston White, Cameron Trask, Jack Beath join up and coming talents Chris Abbey and Matt Schubert as well as Jack Webster as retained players for this season. Interstate pre auction selection Chris Sabburg will be a welcome addition to an already powerful top order batting line up. Sabburg, fresh off another stint back in the BBL this time with the Perth Scorchers was unable to attend last year’s BPL tournament due to border closures and travel restrictions. A relatively new recruit, it’s going to be fireworks galore when Strawbs touches down in his home state. Joining an already strong line up is Brenton Edwards from Far North Queensland. Edwards, a COVID replacement player last year, was brought into the Magic’s squad for the back end of the tournament and did not disappoint in his first game, smashing a powerful knock of 66 off 27 balls. He didn’t come easily, with the Magic having to outbid a number of franchises in the Auction who had obviously seen his performances late in BPL|01 and were desperate to make him a player for their franchise, eventually being sold to the Magic for $500,000. Another player who joins him in that situation is former first class batting allrounder Glen Batticiotto who was not retained by the Magic, but picked up after winning an eventual bidding war with cross town rivals the Coastal Marlins for $400,000. Like a fine wine, if Glenn gets going, it will be a very entertaining batting innings with some class stroke making and powerful hitting. Incoming senior coach Ashley Holznagel and his team used their funds wisely for their remaining Auction campaign with grade players Stephen Shaw and Jet Leibke (Marlins COVID replacement BPL|01) being snapped up for $50,000 each. Local Sunshine Coast paceman Scott Aufderheide could turn some heads being picked up for a bargain $50,000 as well as former Norths fast bowler Matt Jenson for $50,000 as well respectively. All of these could well be pigeonholed as bargain buys, but none goes further than interstate quick Michael Hart from Western Australia. A WA 2nd X1 player, 3rd leading wicket taker in the WA premier cricket and a man of the match 7 fa in the grade grand final last season, all for $50,000! Some franchises may be saying What if!? After the Century this season. A combination of quality retention, calculated bidding and some shrewd bargain buys, could very well bode well for the Magic this year! Century Cricket Group acquires the Australian Cricket Institute and Australian Premier League in landmark cricket merger
The newly formed Century Cricket Group has acquired the Australian Cricket Institute (ACI) to form one of Australia’s largest privately owned cricket companies. Century Cricket Group is co-founded by successful healthcare businessman Stuart Giles, Australian cricket great Ian Healy AO and world-renowned commentator Mark Nicholas, alongside cricket entrepreneurs and founders of the ACI Nick Fitzpatrick and Joel Hamilton. Century Cricket Group is creating an integrated ecosystem of cricket opportunities across competitions, coaching and training centres within existing business models, and creating new ones. The ACI has been a staple part of cricket coaching and player development in the Australian community since 2015. As part of their ongoing commitment to making quality cricket coaching available to everyone, it has joined Century Cricket Group and in 2023 will be rebranded to Century Cricket Coaching. “The ACI is very excited to join Century Cricket Group as it means we’ll be able to provide our players, coaches and supporters ongoing evolution and growth, plus give access to a wider and more diverse cricket environment,” said co-founder of the ACI Joel Hamilton. “We will be introducing a fun new look but remain the same team of people who aim to deliver consistent and excellent cricket coaching programs,” said co-founder of the ACI Nick Fitzpatrick. With a focus on showcasing talent from across the country – giving players the scope to grow and expand their game – the Australian Premier League has also joined Century Cricket Group and in 2023 will be rebranded to Century Cricket Competitions. Century Cricket Competitions will continue to build and develop the dynamic and innovative 100-ball Century format introduced with the Brisbane Premier League (BPL) and Adelaide Premier League (APL) giving participants opportunities to play fast and entertaining cricket. Brisbane was the first state to bring the Australian Premier League to market and has had an exciting first two years, with the successful introduction of the 100-ball Century format in its second year. Adelaide has also just successfully completed its inaugural Century competition to excitable fans. “Since its launch, the BPL has always sought to identify opportunities to extend the playing experience of cricketers. To be able to build off the excitement of a privatised franchise cricket competition and to successfully introduce a new playing format is a wonderful next step in the expansion of the Australian Premier League. I cannot wait to see what our league partners, franchise owners, players, coaches and support staff deliver with the Century Cricket Competitions,” said Chair of the Century Cricket Group Stuart Giles. Century Cricket Competitions will run under their new look in Brisbane and Adelaide in 2023 and will expand into new locations. The Century Cricket Group is looking forward to continuing the good work that the ACI and Australian Premier League have done by providing quality and fun cricket experiences for players around Australia
